  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Sadly one of our long time artists, Polly Ngale, has passed away. In her late 80's, Polly was one of the original artists of the Utopia art movement having been involved since its batik inception in the 1980's alongside Emily Kame Kngwarreye. The two shared a similar superimposed dotting technique and were said to be able to convey a deep emotion and sensory experience for the viewer.

Painting brought Polly joy and purpose and she was fortunate to be able to do this over a long career up until her passing. We were fortunate to spend so much time with her. We send our love, grand love, to her family.

Polly Ngale wearing a blue and white stripe polo shirt, sitting and leaning over canvas she is painting in warm colours. Strings of brushwork dots on the black canvas. Sitting next to her looking on fondly is her granddaughter Doreen Kunoth.

Polly Ngale sits side on to the camera, wearing a bright green shirt and yellow head scarf. She is hunched over an almost completed canvas, looking intently at wear she will palce the next dot with her brush in hand. The background is an out of focus corrugated wall of her porch.

Polly’s artworks have been a favorite of mine for some years. I bought one of her richly coloured paintings in Alice Springs and it hangs in our bedroom. I bought another larger work quite recently. Her paintings are wonderful to live with. The classic dotting creates a wealth of subtle variation in each of her paintings. Always more to discover. Her paintings and her influence will live on.

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Aunty Barbara Weir. Barbara passed away peacefully on 3 Jan 2023 surrounded by family.

Artist, friend, family, boss woman, leader, mentor, pioneer. Utopia will never be the same. Barbara was one of the strongest women we knew, and we pray her spirit will guard and protect her family and the people of Utopia as she did in life.

Sending love to all her loved ones.
