About the Artists
Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

This painting depicts elements of the pencil yam story. This yam is sacred to the people of Janet's country, Alhalkere. The pencil yam is a small, long tubular yam (swollen root) belonging to a trailing herb or creeper that often covers large areas of ground with bright green leaves and yellow flowers that blossom after significant rain. In this painting there are yam leaves and flowers, rockholes where yams like to grow, wild oranges (circles), ceremonial body paint designs (arc lines), women (U shapes), digging sticks and coolamons (carved wooden bowls) that the women use to collect the yams and other bush tuckers.
This painting is a genuine original creation, meticulously hand-painted by the artist using acrylics.
