About the Artists
Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Glady Kemarre, a well known Utopia artist, began her career in the late 1970’s with the medium of batik. Over 80 other Utopia women participated in this practice for over a decade before the acrylics on canvas movement swept Utopia in the late 1980’s. Glady swiftly changed mediums, as did many others, to the ease and liberation of acrylics.
Glady went on to become a fine dot artist. Glady lived much of her life with her close relatives Kathleen Ngale, Polly Ngale and Angelina Ngale at a community in Southern Utopia, Central Australia.
The art of painting was a social practice for Glady and the women of her community. Glady rarely painted anything other than her Anwekety Story, where fine dot work represents the sweet black conkerberry called anwekety in Glady’s language.
