  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Dreamtime Sisters by Colleen Wallace Nungari (SOLD)

    90cm x 60cm

The Dreamtime Sisters are good spirits dancing and looking after Colleen's country. Colleen says these sisters were once living people; her ancestors. There is a sacred site on Colleen's country where Dreamtime Sisters are carved on the rock walls, and on these walls this is what they look like. They hold ceremonial fabric which they use to dance with.

In this painting, there are also three long decorated oval shapes flanked by U shaped symbols. The ovals represent the sacred site and U shapes are women performing ceremony. The women are performing ceremony for arlatyeye (sacred pencil yam) and its seed. The Dreamtime Sisters are connected spiritually to the women as represented by the thick white lines. The circle designs throughout the painting are symbolic of waterholes scattered over the country or where women dig for the pencil yam. The trailing yam leaves can be seen emerging from the ground at the bottom of the painting.
