  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Bush Yam by Malanda Kunoth (SOLD)

    30cm x 30cm

Designs in this painting represent a type of pencil yam called Atnwelarr. It's ancestral dreaming story belongs to Malanda's mother's country. Pencil yams are small tubers growing beneath the ground. They are an important bush food source which can be eaten raw or cooked in hot sand and ashes, and are still harvested today. In the Dreamtime, the pencil yam seeds called Kame are especially significant. Two different seeds were borne that created two different species of pencil yam; one called Atnwelarr and one called Arlatyeye.
