  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Wild Orange by Janie Petyarre (SOLD)

    30cm x 30cm

The small compact tree of the atwakeye (Capparis mitchellii) grows about 3½ m high. It has dark green leathery leaves and its creamy white flowers open during the night and wither before the end of the next day. The wild oranges hang down on long stalks, turning a yellow-green tint when ripe. They usually ripen from October through January depending on seasonal conditions.

The ancestral dreaming story for the atwakeye belongs to Jane's country, Ngkwelay in the Utopia region.
