This painting depicts women painted in ceremonial body paint designs.

The name for women’s ceremony in Hazel’s language is Awely. After smearing their bodies with animal fat, women trace specific designs and colours onto their breasts, arms and thighs’ in preparation for ceremony. They singing as each woman takes her turn to be ‘painted-up’. Their songs relate to the dreamtime stories of ancestral travel, dance and other totemic plants, animals and natural forces.

Awely demonstrates respect for the land and ancestors.
