  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Women's Ceremony by Freda Price Pwerle (SOLD)

    30cm x 30cm
    About

The linear designs in this painting represent Awelye (women's ceremony and body paint)for Kame (pencil yam seed). Women take it in turns to be painted up whilst singing songs associated with their Awelye.

Dots in this painting symbolise the yam seed.

In the Dreamtime, there are two parts to the pencil yam story. Two different seeds were born that created two different species of yam; one called Atnwelarr which belongs to Alhalkere and Atnangkere countries, and the other called Arlatyeye which belongs to Arnumarra country.

Freda's mother's country is Alhakere, and this is the part that Freda paints.
