In this painting, Mary depicts Altwerrwhich is the Alyawarr word for the wild orange or split-jack plant (Capparis lasiantha). Amern is the Alyawarr word for food.
Each year, Mary performed ceremonies in relation to the story of Altwerr and collecting its seeds, along with other women of her country.
In the old days the seeds of Altwerr were collected, ground and used to make bread. This practice is not habitual now due to ready made bread, however the story of its practice is passed on to new generations.
