  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

  • Golden Leaf Painting by Gloria Petyarre

    June 20, 2018 1 min read

Introducing award winning artist, Gloria Petyarre's, golden leaf painting.

    Golden yellow Leaves painting

Painted in Matisse's Yellow Oxide, a rich colour reminiscent of yellow ochre found in Central Australia. The colour is complimented with Ash Pink and Australian Ghost Gum, and lit with Titanium White.

This painting represents leaves, some of which have medicinal qualities. Leaves is one of the most prestigious styles in Australian art with an earlier, finer version winning Gloria the acclaimed Wynne Prize.

This subject does not pertain to stories from Gloria’s culture however, and it is an original idea first credited to Gloria in 1994 when she was painting a series of Body Paint paintings at Mosquito Bore in Utopia.

That first one. I was looking, looking. Looks like leaf, and I been put another one and another one and ‘ah yeah’. First leaf” - Gloria Petyarre

Gloria paints with large bold gestural daubs superimposed over one another while the paint is still wet.

This piece has an exquisitely pleasing pattern where leaves appear to be picked up in swift passing zephyrs, entangled in whirls of wind and swept across the landscape. The painting holds no boundaries; it is as if the energy and movement continues off in all directions.

Laurie's works are simplistic in design, offering something more subtle for your walls.

From Ampilatwatja, he focuses each work on a different bush medicine. We have just a few, with two pieces like this in carbon black with antique white dots on a crisp white canvas.
