  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

Anaty (Desert Yam) by Jeannie Mills Pwerle
    180cm x 60cm
Synthetic polymer paint on belgian linen

Jeannie Mills Pwerle paints the Anaty (Desert Yam) Dreaming. The Anaty is the Alyawarr word for desert yam which is similar to a sweet potato and grows across Central Australia. Growing up to the size of a human head, this yam is an important food source for the Aboriginal people of Central Australia and is still favoured and collected today.

In this painting, linear designs represent the yam and its bright magenta flower (pictured below), while the dot work in this painting represents its seed.

Jeannie is a highly respected artist from Utopia and has become well recognised for this style since 2004. In 2008 a large Anaty painting was accepted in the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, the most prestigious Aboriginal art award in Australia.

Jeannie is also well respected in her community, living a traditional life at Utopia as a ngangker (traditional healer or doctor) providing advice, bush medicines and applications to people of her community. Teaching and living her culture is an important aspect of her life.

Laurie's works are simplistic in design, offering something more subtle for your walls.

From Ampilatwatja, he focuses each work on a different bush medicine. We have just a few, with two pieces like this in carbon black with antique white dots on a crisp white canvas.
