Charmaine paints awelye (women's ceremony) for her grandmother's country.

Women's ceremonies are performed to demonstrate respect for the land and ancestors, and ensure well-being and happiness within their community.

Charmaine's grandmother, Minnie Pwerle, was renowned for painting similar markings depicting awelye for Atnwengerrp country which lies in a remote region of Central Australia called Utopia. Charmaine's relatives still reside there.

Markings in this painting are symbolic of different elements of this awelye such as sacred dance sites, Dreamtime stories and body paint designs.
