  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

In this painting, Mary depicts Altwerrwhich is the Alyawarr word for the wild orange or split-jack plant (Capparis lasiantha)Amern is the Alyawarr word for food.

Each year, Mary performed ceremonies in relation to the story of Altwerr and collecting its seeds, along with other women of her country.

In the old days the seeds of Altwerr were collected, ground and used to make bread.  This practice is not habitual now due to ready made bread, however the story of its practice is passed on to new generations.
