Pencil Yam Flower by Janet Golder Kngwarreye (SOLD)

This painting depicts elements of the pencil yam story. This yam is sacred to the people of Janet's country, Alhalkere.The pencil yam is a small, long tubular yam (swollen root) belonging to a trailing herb or creeper that often covers large areas of ground with bright green leaves and yellow flowers that blossom after significant rain. In this painting there are yam flowers, a rockhole where yams grow nearby, ceremonial body paint designs (arc lines), wild oranges (circles), digging sticks and a coolamon (carved wooden bowl) used by women to collect the yams and other bush tuckers.
