Awelye Antarrengeny by Katie Kemarre (SOLD)

Awelye is an Alyawarr and Anmatyerre word for women's ceremony. These ceremonies are performed to demonstrate respect for the land, ancestors and Dreamtime, and ensure well-being and happiness within their community. The pattern of body paint designs in this painting are the same featured on Katie's countrywomen during ceremony; arc lines across the chest, and straight lines down and across the breasts. The colours for women's ceremonies in Katie's country, Antarrengeny, are red and white. One of Katie's main dreamings is Apeng (Kurrajong tree) and Katie has depicted its leaves and seeds. Its seeds were an important and nutritious food source years ago. Not a habitual practice now, Katie's people used to collect these seeds, burn them to remove small hairs, and grind them into a paste for making damper (bread).
