  • About the Artists

Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

This painting by Rosie Pwerle depicts soakages (or waterholes) that are spread across her land in the Utopia Region, as well as bush tucker.

The soakages are depicted by the circular shapes; either filled with blue denoting they are full of water, or left black for those that are dried up and empty.

Oval shapes represent coolamons which are carved wooden bowls that are full of bush tucker that has been collected in bulk.

Collecting water and bush tucker is still practiced today in Utopia.
