About the Artists
Our vibrant and dynamic artists are from the Utopia region; a large remote area of Central Australia which, until recently, had no government funded art centre. As a result of their pioneering efforts, they have one of the strongest and richest art histories.

In this painting, Marie Ryder has depicted women collecting merne yerrampe, known as honey ants. Merne means food in Marie’s language and yerrampe is the honey ant.
Honey ants are a sweet bush food for the aboriginal people. When hunting for them care is taken not to kill or hurt them (or not get bitten either!) so that they can go on and collect more honey. The sac on the back of the honey ant is pure natural honey.
Foot symbols represent the footprints that the women leave in the sand as they walk.
