Alvira Bird Mpetyane was taught by the senior women of Ilkawerne the stories, songs and dances associated with Dreamtime and ceremonies. One of Alvira’s main Dreamtime stories is the Alpar Seed Story. Other Dreaming stories that Alvira paints include Akatyerre (desert tomatoes) and Ahakeye (bush plum).

Alvira is granddaughter to Lindsay Bird Mpetyane, a senior elder of Ilkawerne country and prominent male Utopia artist. Lindsay was the only male who participated in the Utopia Batik movement in the 1980’s.
